On November 21st 2019 Prof. Dr. med. Thomas Fischer won this year's research prize of the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg. The director of the Department of Haematology and Oncology at the University Hospital of Magdeburg is investigating how the metabolism of cancer cells differs from that of healthy cells. "We want to find their Achilles' verses, i.e. molecules that make them vulnerable and can therefore be used for therapy," said the physician describing his work. Together with an international team of researchers, he has succeeded in identifying three such molecules and using them for treatment. "As a result, many people with leukaemia have the same life expectancy as healthy people and this is precisely the driving force that spurs me on again and again to continue my research!"
