Charity Run Against Breast Cancer Kicks Off

Since March 16, 2026, a special fundraising campaign by the Magdeburg University Women’s Hospital has been underway: Eight runners have set themselves the ambitious goal of covering 500 to 1,000 kilometers each over the next 14 weeks. These figures were chosen deliberately. The eight participants symbolize the fact that approximately one in eight women will develop breast cancer during their lifetime. The distance of 500 to 1,000 kilometers symbolizes male breast cancer, as approximately 500 to 1,000 men in Germany are newly diagnosed with breast cancer each year.

With this charity run, the participants want to send a message. For solidarity. For courage. For hope for all people affected by breast cancer. The initiative was launched by staff members of the Breast Center at the University Women’s Hospital in Magdeburg, who are actively participating in the run themselves.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women. In Germany, approximately 75,000 women are newly diagnosed with it each year. Many people are unaware that men can also be affected. The disease has significant societal implications. This makes education, early detection, and the best possible medical care all the more important.

Quality-assured treatment should always take place in certified breast cancer centers. This includes the Breast Center at the University Women’s Hospital in Magdeburg. There, patients receive comprehensive care in accordance with current medical standards.

The charity run aims to raise awareness about breast cancer. The donations go directly to benefit patients. Support is provided for patient cafés, patient associations, and events for patients, among other initiatives. The goal is to support those affected, promote exchange, and offer assistance in coping with the disease in everyday life.
